The Reaching sits in a category of its own: it is not a technology at all but a biological or psychic trait, present in only a handful of individuals. Where a Squid acts as a living relay between a speaker and a listener, the Reacher bypasses any intermediary entirely, threading their consciousness through space to touch another mind. The experience is described as intimate to the point of discomfort—colors, textures, half-formed images, and raw emotion flood in without the filter of language. Barrayaran society, with its rigid hierarchies and deep suspicion of anything that bypasses established channels of power, regards the Reaching with particular wariness. A Reacher cannot be censored, recorded, or intercepted in the way a radio transmission can. This makes the ability both a source of personal power and a political liability. In the wider Imperium, where individual liberties are more broadly protected, Reachers tend to be treated with greater curiosity and less fear, though the social awkwardness of having one's innermost thoughts potentially perceived by another remains a universal human concern. The ability is not a weapon in the conventional sense, but it carries an inherent asymmetry: the Reacher must choose to extend the link, yet the recipient's mind is touched whether they fully consent in that moment or not. This ethical tension runs through every relationship in which the Reaching appears, making it as much a story about consent, trust, and vulnerability as it is about psychic mechanics.

She did not turn. She never turned. Not yet. A warmth bloomed at the base of her skull, gentle as a fingertip pressing a bruise. Then a thought that was not her own, soft and unhurried: *I'm not asking. I'm just… here. You don't have to answer.*

She closed her eyes. The hallway stretched out in her mind's eye, the brass rail gleaming, the distant chime of the service lift. And beneath it all, a second presence, patient and quiet, waiting at the edge of her awareness like a hand held out in the dark. She let it stay. For now, that was enough.

The Reaching is an innate psychic ability that allows a person to project thoughts, emotions, and sensory impressions directly into another individual's mind across any distance. It requires no equipment, no Squid, and no technological intermediary. The Reacher simply extends their consciousness toward a target and, if the link is accepted or at least not actively resisted, establishes a two-way channel of mental communication. Only a small number of people in the Vorkosigan Saga universe possess this ability naturally. It is not taught, trained, or amplified by technology in the way Squidding is. A Reacher cannot force the connection against a strongly willed recipient, though the initial contact can be disorienting and, to some, feel like a violation of privacy. The Reacher bears the greater cognitive load: maintaining the link is mentally exhausting, and prolonged reaching can leave the user drained, disoriented, or temporarily unable to distinguish their own thoughts from the other person's. Socially, the Reaching occupies an uneasy middle ground. In Barrayar, where the military Squid network is the sanctioned form of telepathic communication and the state monitors all such channels, an unmediated mind-to-mind link is viewed with suspicion. It bypasses official oversight, leaving no log, no recording, no third party. In the Imperium, Reachers are more accepted but still considered unusual; many keep their ability private to avoid the constant social pressure of being asked to 'just reach' instead of speaking. Across the novels, the Reaching functions less as a plot engine and more as a lens on character: it forces honesty, strips away the careful phrasing of diplomacy, and makes intimacy inescapable. Its greatest cost is not physical but emotional—once you have felt another person's unfiltered inner life, you can never quite return to the comfortable fiction that words are enough.
